Review: Hereditary (No Spoilers)

By Angel

Movie Description:  “After the family matriarch passes away, a grieving family is haunted by tragic and disturbing occurrences, and begin to unravel dark secrets.”

The Good

They forgot to credit Satan for writing the screenplay. This was a dark film, extremely uneasy to watch the entire time. The horror was brilliantly captured with superb camera movement. I wanted to go to Church after the movie it indeed is disturbing.

Performances were exceptional. Toni Collette was a force of nature as she completely sold me on her emotional rollercoaster of dread, hatred, and fear. Alex Wolff surprised the hell out of me. I believed they were actually seeing these supernatural elements. Milly Shapiro was unsettling. Oscar Worthy acting all around.

Music was amazing as it made my entire body tense up. The sound effects sounded like they were coming from my own mind.

Cinematography was breathtaking, my eyes were glued to the screen because the shots and set design were gorgeous.

The Bad

There were large portions of the movie where I had no idea where the character progressions or story were going. I lost interest in the characters and as a result felt bored. I thought it took too long to reach the climax or the main point and once it did, it felt underwhelming.

Message

Family can be a horror if you don’t communicate. Trauma, if not dealt with, will never be undone and can be passed down through generations.
